Stephen Elmore
1905 - 1975

Stephen Elmore was born in 1905 in Patterson, Louisiana. His nickname was "Spud".  He was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church under the pastorship of the late Reverend L. B. Bennett.  He served on the Deacon Board and in the church choir for many years.  He also served as a Private in World War II.  Uncle Steve, as he was lovingly called by family members, was often seen riding his bicycle around town.  He worked at the Patterson Shipyard most of his adult life.  Steve Elmore never knew a stranger.  A soft-spoken man, he exhibited a peaceable personality which drew others to him.  He visited his mother regularly and often played the piano during her time of illness.  He married the late Rosa Mae Schexnayder, and the two of them lived on Second Street in Patterson until his untimely death in 1975.   Though he and his wife Rosa Mae never had children, his nephew Steve Veal bears his name.
