Chanie Elmore Wilson
1917 - 1994
Chanie Elmore was the ninth child born to Elihu Handy and Nellie Elmore. She was born on January 10, 1917 in Patterson, Louisiana. She was baptized in 1929 at Saint Luke Baptist Church, and was married to Vernett Wilson at St. Luke Baptist Church. She was a life-long member of St. Luke. Their union produced a daughter, Frankie Jo. For 15 years, Frankie was the couple's only child. Later in life, Chanie was blessed with three other children. They are Steve Allen, Calvin "Cal" Wesley, and Renee Olga "Nay Pooh" or "Sista". They were her little angels.
She was employed with Hattie A. Watts for many years as one of the lead cafeteria cooks. She was well known throughout her community as an excellent cook and baker. During the Christmas holidays she would bake delicious homemade cakes for family and friends. Her signature Bourbon Pecan Fruit Cakes were a family favorite. While raising her young family and working full-time, Chanie found the courage and strength to attend night school. Family life came first, but her determination to receive her high school diploma after many years was finally realized. She retired from the school system when her youngest daughter, Renee, was in college.
After the death of her youngest and beloved sister Ida Bell, Chanie raised Tashaunya Williams. She was also Godmother to her niece, the late Deborah "LaLa" Wilson of New Orleans and Sandra Wilson Jackson of Patterson. She embodies a spirit of benevolence and kindness. She loved and lived life to the fullest. Always happy to see her nieces and nephews, she always referred to them as "my babies". But her most prized possessions were her grandchildren. She was blessed to see all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with the exception of three. She has a total of 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 3 great, great-grandchildren. Chanie entered her eternal rest from this life on February 20, 1994. Her grandchildren have her on video; cherished memories that will be passed on for generations to come. She was very blessed and is deeply missed.
