The "Buddy Ratliff and Handy Elmore" Education Fund
2015 was the Launch of the "Buddy and Handy" Education Fund. As background to this Education Fund, following is information relative to who Uncle Buddy was. He was the son of Samuel Ratliff [Radliff] (abt 1850) and Emmaline [Emeline] [Moore] (abt 1842) who married on December 22, 1871. Samuel came to Patterson from Kentucky and Emmaline grew up in Patterson . They had 15 children of which 5 lived. They were Mary (1871), Anna (1873), Nellie (1875), Corilla (1877), and Samuel Jr. (1881). Samuel Ratliff Jr. married Ida and lived and died in Houston, Texas. They had no children. However, our beloved Aunt Sadie informed various family members that her uncle Samuel Jr., who was affectionately called "Uncle Buddy" was a visionary. He ended all of his letters to his niece, Sadie, with these words, "The world is calling for educated black boys and girls for the future." Elihu Handy Elmore also believed in education because he personally taught his ten children how to read, write and do their numbers each day after he came home from working 12 hours in the field.
