Patterson, LA is located in Southern Louisiana in St. Mary Parish
Patterson, Pattersonville, or P-Town is where our history continued for the Elmore Family. Here are some highlights relative to our history. Dutchmen leaving New Orleans, Louisiana up the Mississippi River established Patterson in 1800. The community was a Dutch Settlement. Later they called it Dutch Prairie and then Dutch Town.
In 1832, Captain John Patterson came from Indiana to the Dutch Settlement. He renamed the town Pattersonville. By the early 1800’s, many people from Ireland, Germany, Holland, England and “Anglo America” found their way to St. Mary Parish. Other historical facts are located on this page, click here.
Patterson is known for a variety of contributions to society. Many of our family members with surname such as Ratliff played major roles in those contributions. In law enforcement, Jessie Paul, Jr. grandson of Anna Ratliff Paul (who is sister to Nellie Ratliff wife of Elihu Handy Elmore) was Patterson's first Black Chief of Police. He is given recognition along with other Police Chiefs for helping to pave the way for the current administration. In keeping with that grand tradition of law enforcement, Pamela Green Washington ran a vibrant campaign running for Chief of Police in 2014. Though unsuccessful, she had a great showing of support from the community.
