Amanda Elmore Wilson
1898-1982

Picture

Picture
On a brisk fall day in the bayous of  Louisiana, Amanda Elmore was born to Elihu Handy Elmore and Nellie Ratliff Elmore.  It was on November 10, 1898 in Patterson, LA   She was the second eldest of ten children.  She was saved at an early age and served the Lord Jesus at the Good Hope Baptist Church as a faithful Deaconess.   She was also a member of the Benevolent Society and the Eastern Star.  She married Lawrence Wilson and they had several children  Paul Lawrence Wilson and Gillis Rudolph Wilson (GR).  Note:  Profiles for Paul and GR are done separately.  They also had a set of twin girls who expired as babies.  Note: She was also step mother to Johnnie Wilson and Martha Jane Wilson children of Lawrence Wilson from a previous marriage.  She later married Willie Wilson, however, there were no children from this union.

She was a wonderful person who during her time  had vision beyond her years.  A wise woman, she epitomized what the Bible calls a virtuous woman in Proverbs 31.  She owned her own home-based business.  She was a seamstress or in today's vernacular a manufacturer of Women's Clothing and a Designer.  Her specialty was the mature figured woman, the divas of her day.  She could make anything.  It was not uncommon for her customers to bring pictures from the Sears  or Spiegel catalogs to name a few.  From there, she was cut out her own patterns.

She was also a fabulous cook.  Her lemon cream meringue pies were out of this world!  Blackberry cobbler was mouth watering.  Her smothered okra and chicken with rice were great.  And, let's not forget the scrumptious cakes  - made with butter no less

She was a lover of people especially family.  It was not unusual to find grandchildren, nieces and nephews spending their summer vacations at her house or the neighbor's kids getting a bite to eat.   She was a also a nurturer and typified a cheerful Giver.  Family UNITY was first and foremost as she had daily contact with her sisters and brothers.  It was no big thing to visit or to lend a helping hand to FAMILEE.  Because of that Great Giving Spirit, she was a blessed Woman of God.   She transitioned this life on December 9, 1982.

Memories

Picture
From Sheena Wilson Coleman.  I have wonderful memories of  my grandmother who we affectionately called "gram-mo".  I recall spending my summers with she and my step grandfather  who for some reason we called "Uncle Willie".  Probably because all of the cousins did so . . . Anyway, I recall sitting on the porch  eating  her famous lemon cream meringue pie or some other dessert she had lovingly made.  She  would often allow me to help with making those other scrumptious desserts.  My motive was to lick the spoon or bowl . OMG, those were the days.  She  also taught me and others how to sew.  She was truly a wonderful person, who as far back as I can remember, valued family relationships.  She was always ready to give a helping hand.  I  miss her as I write this with tears streaming down my face.

Remember when . . . from Andrea Wilson Hilliard, Sandra Wilson Jackson, & Patricia Bergeron

Remember when. . .
  • Gram-mo used to fix us coffee in the morning
  • We would clean gram-mo house on a Saturday morning and find all those coins, she would let us keep
  • Gram-mo would let us play with her thread spools
  • Gram-mo let us press her hair and part it down the middle and gave her two ponytails
  • Gram-mo let us lay our head on her lap in church
  • Gram-mo let us help her cook
  • Gram-mo let us shake her arm and she would be so tickled
  • We were sick and she did whatever she could to make us better
  • Our stomach hurt and Gram-mo would rub it to make it better
  • Gram-mo let us squeeze the lemon to make lemonade
  • Gram-mo fried those sweet potatoes in that black skillet and put sugar and butter on it and remember when
  • Gram-mo only had two channels on the TV to watch.

Reflections

I think about the Christian values she modeled for us .  I carried those into my adult life ~ From Sheena
